Over 40 years ago, Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey had its humble beginnings. It started with a few kids, two old vans, and a dedicated group of hockey players that wanted to share their love for the great game of hockey. The Vineyard rink was still years away and the children would travel to the Falmouth rink on Sunday mornings. The kids paid $10 dollars for travel, boat and ice time and in exchange would have a day full of fun learning the game of hockey. The young hockey players would play the role of rink rats, if only for one day, hanging around the rink and waiting for their turn to skate.
Now years later the youth hockey program has grown to include over 150 children from the ages of 5-14 years old. The program includes 5 travel teams, the Island league (an exciting 3 on 3 half ice game) designed to promote skills, fun and excitement, a house mite program and a “learn to play” program called “instructionals” for the youngest of players.
The Vineyard’s children now have a rink of their own. They play in leagues, have uniforms and bond as teams playing hockey. These young players never seem to get enough ice time. They love the feel of the speed as the air flows past them as they rush up and down the ice, shooting pucks and spraying the boards with snow from their skates. This game is infectious for parents as well often getting entire families involved cheering and even picking up the game themselves. Youth Hockey is one of the best ways to pass the winter months providing enough excitement for the entire family.
